ASSF provides one recipient with a fully paid culinary scholarship to the International Culinary Center (ICC) in New York City and a paid internship in New Orleans upon completion of the ICC program.

The Aarón Sánchez Scholarship Fund is an initiative aimed at helping future generations of Latino chefs reach their goals both in and out of the kitchen through mentorship and education. Each recipient receives a full culinary scholarship to the International Culinary Center (ICC) in New York City, along with supplies, living expenses and mentorship opportunities. Aarón credits his mentors, including his mother Zarela Martinez and chef Paul Prudhomme, among others, with giving him the skills for a successful career. He launched the Aarón Sánchez Scholarship Fund to help the next generation of Latino chefs and leaders. “These young chefs are the future of our industry and it’s up to us to highlight their abilities and talent and provide them with the skills and opportunities to succeed.”
Our organization selects Latino youth that have displayed drive, potential and creativity. We mentor, educate and empower these students so they can one day become leaders in the culinary world. The recipients are encouraged to honor their culture and heritage throughout the program as well as explore all cuisines and facets of the industry.
The Aarón Sánchez Scholarship Fund has partnered with the Hispanic Federation, the nation’s premier Latino nonprofit organization. The Hispanic Federation was founded in 1990 and seeks to support Hispanic families and strengthen Latino institutions through work in the areas of education, health, immigration, civic engagement, economic empowerment, and the environment. Together, we are working to empower Latino youth by providing education, mentorship and the resources necessary to become the next generation of culinary leaders.

Yan is 21 years old, originally from Caguas, Puerto Rico, and dreams of opening a sustainable restaurant, focused on teaching the community about sustainability and empowering people of scarce resources to start a career in culinary arts. She is the first female recipient and we are very excited about mentoring her and helping her to become a strong Latino female chef. Yan has studied in Barcelona, Spain and San Juan, Puerto Rico and hopes to continue her travels and explore different cultures and cuisines.
Alejandro is 20 years old, from New Orleans and of Mexican descent. He currently has two jobs, speaks multiple languages including Spanish, Arabic and Chinese, and is involved in community service. We are thrilled to announce that he will be our 2018 New Orleans scholarship recipient and look forward to mentoring him through his journey.
Oswaldo Rios, our first recipient is just 21 years old. He’s originally from Mexico, and immigrated to the US with his family when he was about 8. Oswaldo was working at Filipes in New Orleans when we first found him. He has since graduated the Professional Culinary Arts Program from the International Culinary Center located in NYC and has had an externship under Chef Alex Stupak at Empellón.
